The plan aims to keep up with housebuilding targets and demand.
A brownfield site refers to previously developed land, which is or was occupied by a permanent structure.
Most brownfield sites have been left derelict, but the plan will allow local councils to bid for funding to build on these sites.
The funding, (known as the Brownfield Land Release Fund), aims to deliver over 17,600 new homes and 56,000 skilled new jobs over the next four years.
The government have said a brownfield-first approach is at the heart of its planning reforms through the Levelling Up and Regeneration Act.
Minister for Housing, Lee Rowley said:
“This fund will transform unloved and unused brownfield sites into thriving new communities, helping more young families onto the property ladder.”
