eSports, also known as competitive gaming, has attracted a considerable amount of attention in the past 10 years.
eSports competitions are held both globally and online and attract players from many different countries.
Players are permitted to take part individually or as part of a group. Those who come in first place can take home prize money of up to £1.3 million or more.
In 2023, the UK hosted two massive tournaments; the Call of Duty World Series of Warzone Global Final, and the League of Legends Mid-Season Invitational.
The growing success of eSports means that many international players are invited to the UK to participate in major tournaments.
Ready, player one
In order for international players to travel to the UK, they must receive a letter from a gaming company, (or an arts/entertainment organisation) inviting them to participate.
Players must then apply for a Permitted Paid Engagement (PPE) visitor visa. This allows anyone aged 18 or over to visit the UK for up to one month.
It also allows them to perform paid work relating to their expertise/profession, which includes participating in an event or tournament.
However, they must prove that they are a full-time eSports player. It cannot be a hobby or a ‘side hustle’.
The invitation letter should be submitted with their PPE application as proof and should also be presented to a UK Border Force Officer upon arrival.
